Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit ‘four times as big as Burnout Paradise’

Matt Webster chatted with the EA blog the other day, and he sad that Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit will be about ‘four times bigger’ than Criterion’s last big racing game, Burnout Paradise. Here are a few reasons why. First and foremost, Criterion wanted the cars going upwards of 250 miles per hour, so more speed means more room needed. There will also be more elevation in the levels, as well as more space to do things like hide your car in the bushes and find off-road shortcuts. Webster says there are over 100 miles of tarmac, and lots of other space to explore as well.

He also talks about the game’s “Autolog” system, which will allow for ghost competitions between players, and what he’s calling the “Speed Wall,” a set of leaderboards which shows how close you are to overtaking your friends, even if they’re not online. And finally, Webster says that Criterion has been hard at work replicating real cars for the game — they had to fine tune the wheels of a McLaren out 2 mm just to get it to hit the right top speed in-game. Sounds like the game is coming along well — it’s scheduled to hit the lights and punch it this November.

Uncharted 2 demo & DLC heading onto the PlayStation Store January 28

Naughty Dog announced that a free Uncharted 2 demo is making its way to the PlayStation Store next Thursday, January 28th. In addition, premium DLC will arrive alongside the demo for fans that are still playing online.

As previously mentioned, the first DLC pack will add Sev and a Helghast soldier from Killzone 2, Nathan Hale and a Chimera from Resistance 2, and Cole (both good and evil variants) and Zeke from inFAMOUS. This first set of DLC will be available for $4.99 in the US.

Modern Warfare 2 makes a billion dollars

Were you planning on giving Activision a billion dollars during 2009? Its a little late to turn back but that’s what you have done — and that’s only for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Activision announced that Infinity Ward’s FPS just hit the $1 billion threshold in sell-throughs. Which means, yes, that some of that billion went to retailers and not just Activision. Keep in mind that $550 million of those sales happened in the first five days, meaning that more than half of the game’s total worldwide sales occurred right at launch.

“There are only a handful of entertainment properties that have ever reached the $1 billion mark,” Activision CEO Bobby Kotick, beneficiary of some of that one billion dollars you put into this game, said, “which illustrates the power of the Call of Duty franchise and mass appeal of this game.”

PixelJunk Shooter is now available on the PSN Store

PixelJunk Shooter just released on the Playstation Store for $9.99. This PixelJunk game actually has a bit of a story to it. The game takes place years from now and the story begins by telling you how minerals on earth became scarce so humans decided to search and mine minerals on other planets, but the humans start getting attacked by enemies and you have to rescue the humans. The game play is simple yet addictive, you control this yellow ship (the one in the picture above) and you go around caves on other planets killing enemies and rescuing miners who got trapped in the cave.

The long awaited game Gran Turismo 5 finally gets closer to its release date with the demo coming to PSN on December 17. Gran Turismo 5 already had a game-like demo titled Gran Turismo Prologue which released in April of 2008, but this is the actual demo for Gran Turismo 5.
